Das irische Rom

Gleich heute Morgen nach dem Frühstück sind wir nach Armagh.

Die  kleine Stadt Armagh in der Nordirischen Provinz Ulster wird auch irisches Rom genannt, was auf den Gründer der Stadt, den heiligen Patrick zurückgeht. Armagh ist seit 1500 Jahren der religiöse Mittelpunkt ganz Irlands. Dort, wo St. Patrick einst seine Steinkirche errichtete, steht heute die anglikanische St. Patrick's-Kathedrale.

Die beeindruckende römisch-katholische Kirche wurde 1840 erbaut auf dem Hügel Drum Saileach und trohnt so über der Stadt. Sie gehört zu den größten Kirchengebäuden in Irland und ist Bischofskirche des römisch-katholischen Erzbistums Armagh. Der Innenraum ist aufgrund der vielen Buntglasfenster sehr hell und prächtig, der Fußboden ist geschmückt mit prachtvollen Mosaiken und italienischen Marmor. Keltische Einflüsse sind sehr deutlich erkennbar. 

 

Durch das Zentrum verläuft die Straße The Mall mit vielen Häusern im gregorianischen Stil. Eine wunder schöne kleine Stadt die eine Vielzahl an Festivals bietet, wie z.B. das „Armagh Apple Blossom Festival“  das während der alljährlichen Apfelblüte stattfindet. 

Wer sich am nördlichen Ende von The Mall die Straße entlang nach Westen bewegt, erreicht nach einem kurzen Fußweg das Planetarium. Das Planetarium ist ein absolutes Muss, vor allem für Familien mit Kindern.

The Irish Rome

This morning after breakfast we went to Armagh.

The small town of Armagh in Northern Ireland Ulster is also called Irish Rome, which dates back to the founder of the city, the holy St. Patrick. Armagh is the religious center for 1,500 years throughout Ireland. Where once St. Patrick built his stone church today is the Roman Catholic St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The impressive Roman Catholic church was built in 1840 on the 'Hill  Drum Saileach' and enthroned as above the city. She is one of the largest church buildings in Ireland and is a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church Archdiocese of Armagh. The interior is very bright and gorgeous because of the many stained glass windows, the floor is decorated with beautiful mosaics and Italian marble. Celtic influences are very evident.

 

Through the centre of the road runs The Mall with many houses in the Gregorian style.

A wonderful beautiful little town offers a variety of festivals, such as the "Armagh Apple Blossom Festival" during the annual apple blossom takes place.

Who moves on the north end of The Mall along the road to the west, just a short walk to the planetarium. The planetarium is an absolute must, especially for families with children.
